WEHS students drive carefully in Save A Life

Posted

Williston-Elko High School (WEHS) scholars watched each other crash into buildings, trees, and other cars while simulating distracted driving at the Save A Life Tour held in the gymnasium on the morning of February 9.

The Save A Life Tour is a safe driving awareness program that aims to inform, educate, and demonstrate the consequences of poor choices made behind the wheel. WEHS students participate in this program to give them further knowledge of the dangers of distracted driving and urge them to practice safe driving habits.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, the state averages two crashes every hour involving a distracted driver and teen drivers are involved in a wreck that results in injury or death every 1.4 hours.

WEHS students got behind the wheel one by one to simulate distracted driving. One station required students to put on a virtual reality headset to mimic drunk driving, and the other required them to respond to multiple text messages while behind the fake wheel.

While few succeeded in the distracted driving simulation, most crashed. Overall, students were enthusiastic to participate in the program and try their best to stay between the virtual yellow lines.

Students received pledge cards, wrist bands, and signed their names on a poster kept by the school.
