The winner of the Second District of South Carolina’s 2024 Congressional Art Competition has a connection to Barnwell County.

Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) announced Kinsleigh Ringus of Lexington High School as the winner. She is the daughter of Adrian and Ashleigh Ringus, who are originally from Barnwell.

“The Congressional Art Competition is a way to recognize the talent of young artists in the Second Congressional District of South Carolina and across the nation. I congratulate Kinsleigh for her wonderful submission. The piece, entitled ‘Light of Freedom,’ is a talented and colorful use of watercolor and ink to convey a patriotic message. A special thank you goes to her parents, Adrian and Ashleigh, as well as her art teacher, Jade Griswold. I look forward to showing her artwork to all of our visitors in the U.S. Capitol over the coming year,” said Congressman Wilson.

Each year, Rep. Wilson and his colleagues in the House of Representatives participate in a nationwide high school art competition sponsored by the Congressional Institute.

“The Congressional Art Competition is a way to recognize the talent of young artists here in the Second Congressional District of South Carolina and across the nation,” said Wilson.

Open to all high school students in the Second District, each submission must be original, two-dimensional and represent this year's theme: America the Beautiful.
Kinsleigh’s winning artwork will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol with art from all participating districts around the country.

“This is truly a spectacular exhibit - one that I encourage all to come and see if you are ever in Washington,” said Wilson.

Kinsleigh and her parents recently traveled to Washington, D.C. for the awards presentation. Kinsleigh’s piece is in the Cannon Tunnel leading into the Capitol.

“What a beautiful place that was to visit and to know that Kinsleigh has work hanging there is such a treat,” said Ashleigh Ringus.

The Congressional Art Competition has inspired and encouraged young artists for the past 40 years.
