Bond has been denied for the woman charged with murdering 17-year-old Maylashia Hogg and her unborn baby.

Jacqueline Y. Reid, 62, of 31 Perry Street, Barnwell, appeared before magistrate Judge Susan Anderson on July 2, the day after she was arrested and charged with two counts of murder.

Ried stated she did not want to speak to Judge Anderson, but did request an attorney. Until Reid obtains counsel and a second bond hearing is set with the attorney present, Reid’s bond will continue to be denied due to the nature of the crime.

Hogg’s stepfather, Michael Sapp, said Reid was a friend of the family and would often eat food and spend time at Hogg’s grandfather’s house.

“She was a regular friend to our family, she was always over at Joe’s house interacting with them, having drinks, or cooking on the grill,” said Sapp.

Reid’s residence is listed as 31 Perry Street in Barnwell, according to S.C. Court digital records. Perry Street is adjacent to Hogg’s home and is the same street off of which Hogg’s body was found 10 days after she went missing on February 8.

During the bond hearing, Sapp spoke on behalf of the victim’s family, stating his disbelief at the charges against Reid because he asked her numerous times if she saw Maylashia or knew  anything about her disappearance.

“I asked her several times, ‘Have you saw Maylashia?’ and she looked right at me and said, ‘No’...Knowing the whole time that she already had done it,” said Sapp through tears.

In addition to the emotional toll of losing his daughter and unborn granddaughter, Sapp was bothered by the lack of remorse expressed by Reid at the bond hearing.

“I don’t know how to feel right now because basically, bond was denied… that’s a good thing.. But she shows no remorse at all and that's what bothers me… she took two innocent lives,” he said.

Sapp is still raising Hogg’s 14- and 15-year-old siblings, who he said have had a “bumpy ride” over the past year. According to Sapp, her sibling was the one to inform him when law enforcement located Hogg’s body on February 18.

“It’s been a real rough year,” said Sapp.
