Two inmates attack corrections officer

Two inmates at the Barnwell County Detention Center (BCDC) were charged with inciting a riot, aggravated assault by mob, and throwing of body fluids on correctional facility employees.

Nine days after Kenneth Alex Grubbs, 25, and Dustin Carroll, 33, were arrested and charged in relation to shots fired at a Snelling home, the pair attacked a corrections officer.

Around 11:30 a.m. on January 5, officers were called to the detention center for an assault on a deputy.

According to the Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office’s (BCSO) incident report, Deputy George Straub was assisting an inmate in a unit. The report states Grubbs yelled a question containing an obscenity at Straub while he was looking around the unit.

The report states the deputy was unsure who said the remark and asked, “Who said that?”

At this time, Grubbs said something to Carroll and the two ran up behind Straub.

“Inmate Grubbs and inmate Carroll began punching Deputy Straub in the back of his head and back. Deputy Straub turned around and the inmates Grubbs and Carroll punched him in the face and head,” states the report.

The inmates then spit on the deputy before he got out of the unit and called for assistance.

When assistance arrived, Carroll was immediately handcuffed. Grubbs attempted to run from deputies before being apprehended and handcuffed. Both inmates were placed into the max security area at BCDC.

A video of the incident was provided showing the attack, states the report.

Straub was sent to seek medical treatment and warrants were obtained from Magistrate Judge Susan Anderson to arrest and charge Grubbs and Carroll in relation to this incident.

“The Barnwell County Sheriff's Office makes protecting the public a priority but, we also protect our law enforcement family. Anyone who assaults or attacks a law enforcement Officer will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said BCSO in a statement.

Bond was denied for these charges.
