GBMS awarded Walmart Community Grant

Guinyard-Butler Middle School (GBMS) was selected to receive a $1,000 Walmart grant for a new Warpony Printing Press.

The grant funding will go to purchasing a laser printer, toner, a thermal laminator, and other supplies for the Warpony Printing Press to implement this project. Thanks go to Ms. Henrietta Youmans-Williams, assistant principal at GBMS, for creating this proposal.

“The Printing Press allows our students and teachers to collaborate while completing scientific investigations,” shared Williams. “This grant makes it possible to create opportunities for greater future options in science and language arts.”

According to the project guidelines, 8th Grade Science and English Language Arts classes will collaborate to conduct, test, and research a STEM hypothesis aligned with the 8th grade South Carolina College and Career Readiness Standards. For example, they may pose the question, “How does varying the amount of force or mass of an object affect the motion (speed and direction), shape, or orientation of an object?” The students will then write, edit, and revise their research findings in the Stall Wall. The Stall Wall will be placed in the restroom stalls and throughout the community for students, community members, and the faculty and staff to learn fascinating facts about their science investigations.

According to Walmart executives, “By receiving this grant, you are part of a long history of Walmart’s commitment to giving back to the communities where we operate. In fact, Mrs. Helen Walton used to say ‘It’s not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.’”
