On May 5-6, hometown basketball team the Carolina Shockers traveled to North Charleston to participate in the “Bash at the Beach Basketball Tournament” at the North Charleston Athletic Center.
They took several boys and girls teams but it was the varsity boys who took the tournament by storm. After winning the first game in the morning at the athletic center, the team had to travel to Military Magnet School for the night cap. In the fourth quarter the lead changed five to six times with both teams giving all they had.
With 5.6 seconds to go, the Shockers were down two points. The Shockers coach called timeout, knowing he only has one play and no timeouts to win the game. The crowd was on pins and needles knowing they needed this game to advance to the Championship the next day. With 5.6 seconds left on the clock, the Shockers had to cover the whole floor with no time for dribbling, just passing and being pressed full court by the other team.
For the winning play after the timeout, guard passes to the forward on the right side the forward passes to the center in center court with two seconds left. The center finds the Shockers’ point guard deep in the right corner and he lets the ball fly. The Shockers fans are on their feet and all you here is boom!
Shockers win by one with no time on the clock and advance to the final Sunday morning. In the Championship game the Shockers shocked the fans with a blowout win, but it was no shock to the players and coaching staff based on hard work and dedication to their craft.
