Hawks cage Cougars 41-6

Posted

The Blackville-Hilda Hawks hosted the Edisto Cougars last Friday, August 30. The Cougars entered the game coming off of a 41-10 loss to Bamberg-Ehrhardt. The Hawks showed them no mercy and beat the visiting Cougars even worse, outscoring them 41-6.

Blackville-Hilda wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Just three minutes into the game, Jayden Jackson found the end zone on a one-yard touchdown run. Darius Jenkins added the extra point and the Hawks claimed an early 7-0 lead. Blackville would never look back.

The Hawks’ star running back and University of South Carolina commitment, Jaquel Holman, sprinted 17 yards to another touchdown with 5:34 left in the first quarter. After the extra point from Jenkins, Blackville-Hilda was ahead of Edisto 14-0.

Jaquel Holoman scored 3 touchdowns and ran for 252 yards on 14 carries.

The Hawks defense held the Cougars in check most of the night, but Edisto did complete a couple of long passes when their quarterback was flushed from the pocket and under heavy pressure, threw the ball up high and a Cougar receiver made a catch. One of these was on fourth down and resulted in Edisto’s only score of the game. The Hawks stopped the 2-point conversion and Edisto had cut the lead to 14-6 in favor of the hometown Hawks. This would be as close as they would get.

Blackville scored the next 27 unanswered points. Holman ran for two more touchdowns, each more than 50 yards. Samari Williams scored on a quarterback run of 17 yards, and then Williams also threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Messiah McFadden. When the scoring was done, Blackville-Hilda claimed an impressive 41-6 win.

Blackville-Hilda head coach Kevin Jones was asked about his team’s big win and said, “We are pleased to get a win. The kids, like always, played really hard. It was a hot night and we had to use some younger players earlier in the game than normal. We still have some things we aren't doing well but those are correctable mistakes.”

Coach Jones highlighted a few key players including Jaquel Holman, who he said “has been kind of getting back into form after an injury in the preseason and then last night he didn't feel well at all with a stomach issue. He still had 252 yards rushing on only 14 carries and 3 touchdowns. He didn't even play the fourth quarter. Samari Williams had another good night. Rushing and passing for a touchdown. Messiah McFadden had his second TD reception of the season.” Coach Jones also mentioned Darius Jenkins who “has handled our kicking duties this year and has been outstanding. We aren't an area that produces kickers, so we have to make them and he has been great for us.”

“Defensively, our kids flew around and made some nice plays. Our middle linebackers Jabarius Johnson and Ricky Richberg are hard-nosed, old school type players that make a lot of tackles. Sophomore Terrion Johnson has been a pleasant surprise early in the season. He is a big kid that is hard to block. Jayden Dash has been dominant on both the offensive and defensive lines,” said Coach Jones.

Messiah McFadden, like many Hawks, is important to both the offense and defense. Shown here making a tackle, McFadden also caught a 16-yard TD from Samari Williams.

The Hawks travel to Ninety-Six this week. “Coach Bennett does a great job up there and it is a school with a lot of tradition on Friday nights. They have a big time running back and we will have to play extremely well if we want to have a chance to get a win,” said Coach Jones.

The Hawks would love your support as they travel to face Ninety-Six, which is 1-1 on the season after beating Ware Shoals 41-30 then losing a close game to 4A Emerald 14-6. Get your friends and family, load up the car, and make that road trip to cheer on your Hawks to another big win. Go Hawks!
