A Barnwell man died 10 days after he was hospitalized from a wreck.

James Rountree, 53, of Barnwell, passed away at Wellstar (AUMC) in Augusta, Ga. on Saturday, January 20 from injuries he sustained from a single-vehicle accident that occurred on January 10, said Barnwell County Coroner Denise Gibson.

The wreck occurred on Jan. 10 around 8:15 p.m. on S.C. Hwy. 39 near Ussery Road, approximately five miles north of Williston. Rountree’s 2000 Chevy pickup was headed south on S.C 39 when the truck “ran off the road to the right, corrected, ran off the road to the left and struck a tree,” said Corporal Tyler Tidwell with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Rountree was the only occupant of the vehicle. He was transported to the hospital where he died 10 days later.
