Four Barnwell County high school seniors were recognized by the Rotary Club of Barnwell County at their Jan. 12 meeting for being stellar examples of the club’s motto, ‘Service Above Self.’

The Service Above Self award is given monthly to students from each high school and an opportunity to celebrate the selfless service of Barnwell County youth.

Recipients of the award are:

Reid Barker, Barnwell High School (BHS). Barker is a senior on the varsity cheer team, pep squad, and was on the school’s competition cheer team this past year. She is also a member of the Beta Club, the National Honor Society, and the National Technical Honor Society. BHS Principal Franklin McCormack described Barker as an extremely well-rounded student who is currently in the running for valedictorian. After graduation, she plans to attend the College of Charleston to study medicine and fulfill her dream of becoming a trauma surgeon. Barker is currently completing a senior year service project where she visits local nursing homes and volunteers at hospice organizations to further her experience in the medical field.

Tamara Corley, Williston-Elko High School (WEHS). Corley is a senior class representative of the Student Government Association and a project coordinator in the Beta Club. During homecoming, she was nominated as ‘Sassy Senior.’ WEHS Career Facilitator Cathy Smith was excited to share about the “kindhearted person” Corley is, stating, “she naturally wants to help people.” Smith explained Corley has the foresight and initiative to accomplish both big and small things that need to happen at WEHS and for herself. After graduation, Corley plans to attend Claflin University and major in psychology to become a counselor.

Angel Smalls, Blackville-Hilda High School (BHHS). Smalls is a senior on the varsity cheer team and a member of the Beta Club. She is currently enrolled in the Barnwell County Career Center’s (BCCC) cosmetology course to fulfill her aspirations of becoming a nail technician. At BCCC, Smalls will obtain a South Carolina State Cosmetology License and a Braiders Certification allowing her to begin serving clientele after graduation. Smalls was proudly introduced by Macedonia Elementary-Middle School and BHHS Assistant Principal, Chelsea Calhoun.

Kaylee Livingston, Jefferson Davis Academy (JDA). Livingston is a senior varsity softball player and cheerleader who is also a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society. Livingston is taking both high school and college courses at JDA to receive dual credit. After graduation, she plans to attend a four-year college or university to major in graphic design or graphic communications. On the way to the Rotary event, Livingston told JDA Head of School Randy Martin she spent her free time hunting and fishing – “for me means that she's very resourceful and that's what we see out of her at school.”
