Zooming Zucchini: Farmers market race promotes creativity, healthy eating

Zucchinis were zooming at the Barnwell Farmer’s Market on Saturday, August 26.

Dawn Snead, market manager, hosted the inaugural Great Zucchini Race. Individuals 18 years and younger designed zucchini cars from scratch, allowing gravity to determine whose car was the fastest.

“The kids (and adults) had a blast building and racing their zucchini cars,” said Snead.

Four categories competed in the race: Little Tykes, under 6 years old; Children, 6-9 years old; Youth, 10-12 years old; and Teens, 13-18 years old. Although there weren’t any teen competitors present for the race, the youth category was packed which made it possible for two winners to reign victorious. The winners were: Little Tykes, RJ & PJ Reid; Children, Jasmine Bowers; and Youth, Isabelle Snead and Makayla Hadley.

Deidre Maynard, a new Barnwell resident from Connecticut, was excited to bring her family to the event. She discovered the event on Facebook and, like the other parents in attendance, was very happy to have a fun activity to fill their Saturday morning. Maynard added that if it weren’t for the public Facebook page What’s Happening? Barnwell Community., she wouldn’t have known about this event and other children’s events in the community.

Dawn Snead looks forward to more interactive, family-friendly events to take place at the farmers market every fourth Saturday of the month. Two upcoming events include scarecrow decorating in September and pumpkin carving in October. No need to pre-register. Bring the family out and have fun!

The market is also open every Tuesday through October from 8 a.m. to noon and Thursday from 3-7 p.m.
