Two events seek to bridge gap between community, law enforcement

The Barnwell County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) hopes to build relationships with the community at two upcoming events.
Law enforcement around the world are under intense scrutiny and some members of the public view law enforcement with fear. The BCSO wants to change that perception.

“Our agency continues to work towards being a beacon of light with the community that we serve. One such way is the implementation of various programs that encourage law enforcement and community unity which in turn strengthens/builds trust, while establishing a strong foundation of transparency, interaction, and collaboration with the communities that we serve,” said Lt. Eric Kirkland, community relations deputy for the BCSO.

On September 28 beginning at 10 a.m., the BCSO will host the 4th Annual Law Enforcement Expo at the Barnwell County Airport. Various law enforcement agencies from across the state will be on hand to showcase equipment and engage with the public. Various vendors representing schools, churches, colleges/universities, food vendors, and organizations alike will also participate.

“Our agency prides itself on the positive success of our youth and offer opportunities for law enforcement and youth collaboration. At our expo, we will have some of our youth working in unison with us,” said Kirkland.

On October 1 beginning at 4 p.m., the BCSO will host the annual National Night Out at Veterans Memorial Park in Barnwell.

“Each year communities across the nation partner with law enforcement nationally to celebrate taking a stand against crime. It is our hope that can successfully unite with our community for this event,” said Kirkland.

Law enforcement will be on hand from various agencies along with our community. Free toys will be given to all the children who come along with other items shared by community participants.

“As an agency we will continue our efforts to protect and serve the citizens of this county. These events are just a couple of ways in which together we can make our community better,” said Kirkland.
