Williston-Elko High School Career Day

Posted

On Friday, April 21, Williston-Elko High School Career Facilitator Cathy Smith teamed up with the Student Government Association students to host a wonderful Career Day!

The team had worked endless hours to prepare for this day! The goal was to provide students and staff with an entire school day of college and career development within a fun setting! The overall theme for the day was “Career Carnival”. The team had event staff shirts made. The students participated in a door decorating contest the week of. The halls and doors were adorned with decorative and colorful carnival theme items. All 16 Career Clusters were represented throughout the day.

The day started off with inspirational words and good advice from their guest speaker, Mr. Brooks Harper, a Career Development expert and job interview coach. They returned to the high school where they rotated classes every 15 minutes to hear from a variety of guest speakers. Each speaker gave valuable information and sound advice on their career field. A few of the Student Government students served as guest speakers as well! To keep the day lively and fun, over 60 door prizes were given to lucky students and staff winners!

After lunch the students enjoyed a wonderful afternoon filled with over 50 vendors in the gym, that included colleges, businesses, and organizations. Barnwell County Career Center student representatives were in attendance as well and showcased their programs. In addition to the gym vendors, the high school track was the second area where they hosted more vendors. This area was designated as “careers on wheels”, which included firetrucks, EMS, SC Works, car dealers and food trucks. The students and staff were able to network with individuals throughout the afternoon, in a more relaxed and festive setting, which also included a DJ. Every student was given a free hotdog, popcorn and cotton candy.

A grand finale surprise finished the day off. The Augusta University Health Aircare helicopter made a landing on the track!

Thanks to so many of the vendors and local Williston business supporters for your time and donations to make this a great event! Special thanks to Mr. Travis Riddle, a Williston-Elko 1998 graduate, who donated $100 for a grand prize winner! Mrs. Smith truly appreciates and commends the Student Government Association students for all their hard work! She calls them her “dream team”!
