Rotary Club establishes free roadside library in Kline

The Town of Kline cut the ribbon to a new amenity on the morning of September 5.

Through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Barnwell County and the town’s leadership, a little wooden library was placed in front of the town hall.

“These little wooden libraries are part of our club’s focus on literacy and we also see these little libraries helping bring people together,” said Judge Jason Stapleton, a Rotarian.

This library in Kline is another step in the Rotary Club’s commitment to improve literacy as the club has implemented many libraries across the county already. The club also donates dictionaries to third graders in each district to further this initiative.

“This ceremony is not just for the Town of Kline, but this ceremony is for all of the towns that make up the county of Barnwell,” said Mayor William Cave at the ribbon cutting.

The libraries are built by Barnwell County Career Center students, bringing “the work of our county’s children to places around our county putting books into the hands of our families,” said Stapleton.

Families can visit the library to take or donate age-appropriate books.

“Local libraries can only enhance what we already feel about education,” said Judge Thomas Williams, a member of the Big 7, an education and community-based organization. “If we can get a book in our young folks' hands, no matter how young they are, that is an excellent step.”

The devotion and benediction for the event were given by Reverend Fred Orr of Kline Baptist Church who stated, “one of the greatest things you did besides your son, was you gave us the opportunity to read. We can read about others, read about ourselves, and read about you.”
