Municipal election brings changes to Barnwell, Williston leadership

Voters in Barnwell and Allendale counties took to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7 for various municipal elections. 

Barnwell County

In Barnwell County, 1,747 of the 7,163 registered voters cast their vote. That equals 24.39 percent voter turnout.

One of the most-watched races was the one for mayor of the City of Barnwell. Mayor Marcus Rivera, the city's first African-American mayor who was first elected in 2019, was defeated by District 1 Councilman Ron Still. Councilman Still had 608 votes while Mayor Rivera had 513.

Three Barnwell City Council seats were also on the ballot. 

  • District 2: Incumbent Peggy Kinlaw won re-election with 163 votes. There were also 25 write-in votes.
  • District 4: Incumbent Jimbo Moody was defeated by Wanda L. Highsmith. Highsmith won with 90 votes while Moody received 63 votes.
  • District 6: Incumbent Ryan Bragg was defeated by a close margin of just 7 votes. He received 81 votes while Jana Black Myers won election with 88 votes.

The only other contested race in Barnwell County was for three seats on Williston Town Council.

Incumbent Alyson Collins won re-election with 241 votes. The other two seats, which are currently held by Scott Valentine and Adadra Neville who didn't seek re-election, were won by Greg Walkup (224 votes) and Judy Myrick Taylor (205 votes). Ken Beatty received 82 votes while John Jerkins Jr. received 163 votes, so they did not win a seat.

Seats were also on the ballot for the towns of Blackville, Elko, Hilda, Snelling, and Kline, though there was no competition. View those results at: https://www.enr-scvotes.org/SC/118372/web.317647/#/access-to-races

Allendale County

In Allendale County, only voters in the Town of Fairfax took to the polls as they elected a new mayor and three council members. 

In the race for mayor, Butch Sauls won with 190 votes while John A. Chaney received 109 and Ken Ready received 86. There was one write-in vote.

Sauls will take over for Mayor Dorothy Riley, who did not seek re-election. 

The three town council seats were won by Dorothy Kennedy (159 votes), Carl Love (192 votes) and Tiffine Forester (155 votes). Kennedy is currently on council while Love and Kennedy are newcomers.

  • Sarah Brooker Burgess - 66 votes
  • Tiffine R. Forester - 155 votes
  • Ida Maxine Frazier Morris - 124 votes
  • Dorothy A. Kennedy - 159 votes
  • Carl M. Love - 192 votes
  • Reid Porter Jr. - 67 votes
  • Daniel Shramek - 104 votes
  • Robert Lee Thompson - 93 votes

There were also 75 write-in votes for council.
