Filing is underway for the first elected Barnwell County School District board.

All five school board seats will be on the November 5 General Election ballot. Candidate filing opened on August 1 and will close at noon on Thursday, August 15.

“Even-numbered Districts 2, and 4 will be filled for two-year terms. Odd-numbered Districts 1, 3, and 5 will be filled for four-year terms,” according to an election notice posted in a recent edition of the newspaper.

The five members who are elected on Nov. 5 will replace the appointed 5-member board that has overseen the consolidation process since lawmakers created the district in 2023. That board currently includes Becky Huggins, Sexton, Brown, Dr. Andy Sandifer, and Terry Richardson.

As of 9 a.m. Friday, August 9, the following candidates have filed for the five seats:

  • District 1: Bob Snead, Becky Wier Huggins, and Alan Kennedy
  • District 2: Felicia Robinson Devore and Dawn Mansfield
  • District 3: Rosey Anderson, Teresa B. Hughes, and Abraham Sexton
  • District 4: Ronnie Brown
  • District 5: Catrena Hughes-Parker, Ethel Faust, Ed Rockwell and Tim Scott

Residents who are qualified electors who want to be a candidate must file a Nonpartisan Statement of Intention of Candidacy during this period with the Board of Voter Registration & Elections of Barnwell County (367 Fuldner Rd., Barnwell). Filing hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are no filing fees.
