The Golden Retreat Activity Center in Blackville celebrated Kwanzaa on Dec. 29.

Started in 1966, Kwanzaa is observed Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 and means "first fruits of the harvest."

"It's a unique American holiday that pays tribute to the rich cultural roots of Americans of African ancestry," said Albertha Williams.

Seven candles were lit representing the seven fundamental principles called Nguzo Saba. They include unity, self-determination, collective work/responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.

The celebration also included facts about the holiday, plus a special dance performance from members of Low Country Health Care System's senior dance classes in Blackville, Williston, and Allendale.
