For the past three years, Calhoun Park has been an array of red, white, and blue in remembrance of those who lost their lives as a result of the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001.

Described as the heart and soul of this memorial initiative, Barbara Christian has spearheaded this annual project. She and a handful of dedicated volunteers place each flag by hand. Every time they do so, remembering the individual whose name adorns the flag’s pole.

The memorial represents the lives lost on Flight 11, Flight 77, Flight 93, at the Pentagon, the World Trade Center I, World Trade Center II, all firefighters, law enforcement, and other emergency personnel, and one canine officer, Sirius.

Christian was recognized by both the City of Barnwell council and mayor, as well as the Barnwell County Council for her continued dedication.

She was presented with a resolution of appreciation at the City of Barnwell’s November 6 meeting. The resolution states Christian “worked tirelessly in fundraising and recruiting people,” as well as being “instrumental in reminding Barnwell citizens of the sacrifice and lives lost.”

“Barnwell County Council wishes to express its appreciation for the contributions Barbara Christian has made to Barnwell County’s remembrance of 9/11,” states the county resolution presented at the Oct. 11 meeting.
