Candidates across the county have filed for numerous seats in the upcoming November 2024 election.

Before the General Election in November, a statewide primary will be held on June 11. This is for candidates facing opposition in their own party. The winner from each primary race will then advance to the November ballot to face any opponent from the other party.

Four have filed for U.S. House of Representatives District 2 seat, which is currently held by Joe Wilson.

In the Republican primary, Wilson will compete against Hamp Redmond. On the Democratic side, David Robinson II and Daniel J. Shrief are running.

Three have filed for the S.C. Senate District 40 seat representing Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, and Orangeburg counties.

Incumbent Brad Hutto, a Democrat from Orangeburg who has held this seat since 1996, and has filed in hopes of re-election. Kendrick Brown, a Democrat from Bamberg, and Sharon Carter, a Republican from Bamberg, have also joined the race for the seat in the senate.

Three have also filed for the S.C. House of Representatives District 91 seat representing Allendale, Barnwell, and Orangeburg counties. Incumbent Lonnie Hosey has served in this position since 1998 as a Democrat.

Hosey’s opposition for this seat includes current District 5 Barnwell County Councilman Ben Kinlaw, Republican, and Demaris Johnson, a Republican from Barnwell County. Kinlaw is not seeking re-election for county office.

Two have filed in hopes of being elected as sheriff – current Sheriff Steve “Grits” Griffith and Stephen Gunnells. Both are Republicans.

Denise Gibson is the only one to file for Barnwell County Coroner, a position which she has served in since 2020. She filed as a Republican.

Long-time Clerk of Court Rhonda McElveen is the only name appearing on the ballot for this position. She filed as a Democrat.

Four seats on Barnwell County Council are up for election – District 1, District 3, District, 5, and District 7.

Current District 1 councilman Freddie L. Houston Sr. is seeking re-election, and is the only candidate who filed for this seat. He filed as a Democrat.

In District 3, current councilman Don Harper is not seeking re-election and three candidates are vying to take the seat; Andy Hogg, David Peachey, and Willie Walker. Hogg and Peachey will face off in the primary since they filed as Republicans. Walker filed as a Democrat.

In District 5, current councilman Ben Kinlaw is not seeking re-election to county office as he has filed for the S.C. House of Representatives District 91 race. Only JJ Cruz has filed to serve in District 5.

In District 7, current council chairman Jerry Creech is not seeking re-election. Three candidates have filed to serve in the district – Travis Hooper, Alan Kennedy, and Johnnie Zorn. All three filed as Republicans.
