Two Charleston residents died early Saturday morning, April 27, after their vehicle crashed in Barnwell County.

The one-vehicle crash occurred around 3:10 a.m. on U.S. Highway 78 near the intersection with Jean Lane, approximately six miles east of the Town of Blackville. The 2010 Ford Crown Victoria was traveling west on U.S. Highway 78 when it "ran off the right side of the road, striking a ditch" which caused the vehicle to overturn multiple times, said Master Trooper William H. Bennett with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

"Both occupants died at the scene," said Bennett.

Barnwell County Coroner Denise Gibson identified the victims as Alton Snipe, 35, and Vernon Snipe Jr., 37, both of Charleston. She said both were ejected from the vehicle.

There have been five traffic fatalities in Barnwell County so far in 2024.
