Williston-Elko’s Peyton Rimes has committed to play baseball for the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie this fall.

On May 22, Rimes was joined by family, coaches, school administrators, and teammates from Williston-Elko High School (WEHS) in the school auditorium for a signing ceremony. On May 24, the Blue Devil graduated high school.

“I’ve enjoyed playing baseball. It’s one of my favorite things to do. It’s always been a dream to play college baseball,” said Rimes.

WEHS head baseball coach Dalton Mundy said it is “very exciting” to see Rimes sign to take this next step. “I’m very proud of you,” said Mundy.

Mundy highlighted some of Rimes’ athletic accomplishments, including being a 3-time All-Region winner, the 2023 Region Player of the Year, and a 2-time All-State recipient. However, Rimes has also excelled academically as he finished 14th in his class with a grade point average of 4.177.

“It’s always a great day when we get to do this because it represents their hard work on the athletic field and in the classroom,” said WEHS Principal Tony Flowers at the signing. “We appreciate Peyton’s hard work.”

When asked about a favorite memory from his time as a Blue Devil, Rimes recalled his sophomore year when the team won region for the first time in a while. Later that season, he said they played their first playoff game in many years.

“We helped lay steppingstones for the future,” said Rimes, who thanks his teachers, teammates and coaches at WEHS.

After meeting with the coach at USC Salkehatchie, Rimes said it felt like the right move to continue his baseball career. He is excited to meet new people and work with his new teammates and coaches.

Speaking to his younger peers at WEHS who want to play college ball one day, he encourages them to work hard and stay focused on their goals. “Even when you think no one is looking, someone is always watching,” he said.

Rimes plans to major in engineering and hopes to continue playing baseball at another college once his time at USC Salkehatchie is complete.
