Puppets tell story of litter and pollution

Marionettes told the story of how litter and pollution impact communities to Barnwell Primary School and Barnwell Elementary School students on September 13.

Performed by the Columbia Marionette Theatre, the “Litter Trashes Everyone” show was brought to the Barnwell schools through Keep Barnwell County Beautiful’s Graci Hiers and Barnwell County Councilman Ben Kinlaw.

“Barnwell School District 45 is so grateful for the continued partnership with Barnwell County’s ‘Keep Barnwell County Beautiful Initiative.’ Our staff and students thank Ms. Hiers and Councilman Kinlaw for their help and support in bringing this important message to our students through the marionette shows,” said BSD 45 Superintendent Dr.Crissie Stapleton.

Hiers serves as the Regional Beautification Marketing Coordinator within SouthernCarolina Alliance. This is a two-year grant funded position through PalmettoPride to establish Keep SC Beautiful programs in participating counties.

In this position, Hiers works with school districts, businesses, and local governments to bring programs like this to youth. The “Litter Trashes Everyone” show was sponsored by PalmettoPride to be a resource for schools to educate their students about litter and pollution.

PalmettoPride’s Keep SC Beautiful programs teach and emphasize the ‘three E’s’: education, enforcement, and engagement. This approach is referred to by those who utilize it as the ABCs of a proactive litter program.

In teaching the youth about the importance of keeping their community clean, Keep Barnwell County Beautiful members hope it will inspire the upcoming generation to be environmentally conscious citizens.

Not only are these initiatives aimed at lessening the trash seen on roadways and in wooded areas, but also to entice businesses and individuals to establish themselves in Barnwell County.

The Barnwell County School District has been in partnership with Keep Barnwell County Beautiful since the spring, and both hope to continue to bring educational programming about environmental awareness to Barnwell County students.

“We look forward to the other programs and activities we have planned this year as part of this wonderful initiative,” said Dr. Stapleton.
