The Barnwell County Consolidated School District is pleased to announce that Mrs. Chelsea Calhoun will be the next principal for Macedonia Elementary-Middle School (MEMS) for the 2023-2024 school year beginning July 1, 2023.

Calhoun, a resident of Barnwell, is currently the assistant principal at MEMS. She replaces Mr. Eryl Smalls, who is leaving the principalship to spend more time with his new family.

"We are excited that he has decided to remain with our district family in a new capacity," states a press release.

Calhoun has 26 years of educational experience as a classroom teacher and administrator. She is a native daughter of the Blackville-Hilda schools, and she has a strong and personal desire to move the academic needle at MEMS.

Upon acceptance of her new position, she stated, “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve and lead in a place that has been so dear to me during my childhood and my entire career.”

Dr. Marcella Shaw, BCCSD interim superintendent, commented, “We are extremely proud to announce Chelsea Calhoun as the principal of Macedonia Elementary-Middle School. Mrs. Calhoun’s interest in Macedonia is sincere. She has an extensive background in teaching and learning, and I am certain that Mrs. Calhoun will work alongside the MEMES faculty, staff, scholars, parents, and community to advance MEMES to the highest level of academic excellence. Her interest and focus on developing each student as a whole person is commendable. She will continue to bring out the best in our scholars!"
