What is a mother?
Merriam-Webster defines mother as a female parent. But for those who have accepted that role, that definition only begins to describe the duties moms accept.
La Madre, mutter, mother, mum, mom, mama, or mommy, no matter what she is called, she is the one person who stands to receive a little praise this Sunday, May 12 - Mother’s Day.
Everyone has a mom. Whether she actually gave birth to her children, or she was chosen to be the mom in another way, these women take on a multitude of roles during their children’s lives.
The roles these women take on are almost endless – nanny, maid, cook, chauffeur, teacher, coach, medic/ nurse, counselor, gardener, janitor, plumber, referee and role model, to name a few.
From the time a child is born, moms struggle through endless sleepless nights to soothe a crying infant and get up throughout the night to feed and change the little ones.
From scaring away “monsters” at 2 a.m. to watching a piece of her heart drive away for the first time on their own, a mom’s job is never done and is never easy.
With more than 85 million mothers in the United States, some get it right, some do not. Some struggle with the added responsibilities of taking care of another person. But no matter how great (or not so great) they handle their tasks, children grow and learn in their care.
So this Sunday, if your mom is living, please take time to thank her for all that she did get right. If the relationship is strained, now may be a good time to reconnect. If talking to mom is not an option, take time to thank the other women that have made a difference in your life – those who have stood by you, stood up for you and stood behind you, pushing you to be your best. They may not be the one you call mom, but they deserve thanks just the same.
This weekend, we hope all of our “moms” take time to reflect on the lives they have helped shape and are able to enjoy some time with family.
