Corder’s Creative Corner: Fantastical Reading

Posted

This week I wanted to give a brief overview of what I’ve been reading over the past several months.

Though the following list is not a complete register of what I’ve been reading, the books on it are a very strong representation of what I’ve been enjoying lately, namely, fantasy. Magic, dragons, assassins, swords, the whole caboodle.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

This was a thick book. This novel has been tearing up the fantasy charts and enamoring readers for the past fifteen years. For me, it’s different than your typical fantasy. The novel shows the life of Kvothe, who goes from an orphaned performer scraping it out on the streets as a beggar to becoming a renowned folk hero. The novel isn’t filled with daring battles and missions to rescue princesses as you might expect, but it’s definitely worth the 700-plus pages.

The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks

This book is closer to what you might think when you hear the word “fantasy.” It was another thick book, and I almost gave up reading it. The first fifty pages did not enthrall me, but I stuck with it and I was rewarded for my tenacity. The novel follows a boy who becomes apprenticed to one of the best assassins in the world and must learn to control a secret magic. Filled with political intrigue, awesome sword fights, and deadly magic, it’s a fabulous read.

The Dresden Files: Storm Front by Jim Butcher

This is a fun urban fantasy about a wizard named Harry Dresden who also happens to be a private investigator. Harry uses his wizarding skills to solve crimes that are committed on the streets of Chicago, all the while trying to stay on the good side of the authorities—both mundane and magical. The first of a fourteen-book series, I will be starting the second book very soon.

So those are some of the books I’ve been reading lately, and I hope to keep reading more like them as we enter the New Year.

In other news, there have been some awesome updates on my website, cordersbookcorner.blogspot.com. I’m posting chapters of a middle-grade horror novel, as well as sword and sorcery short stories. Be sure to visit the site and to subscribe to my newsletter. Also, feel free to send me an email at dbcorderwriter@gmail.com if you have any questions or if you just want to say hi.

Happy reading!
