Corder’s Book Corner: 5 spooky reads for Halloween

Posted

It’s that chilly, spooky, pumpkin spicy time of year again! That means it’s time to recommend some creepy reads. I have a whole new list for you this year, and I certainly hope that you will check them out!

1. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This was an interesting read because it takes place in an English manor that is set in Mexico. Peculiar, I know, but it works really well. The author does a great job fusing the two cultures to bring forth a horror novel that will send goosebumps up your arms. With all the classic tropes of your favorite Gothic novel, Mexican Gothic offers something unique to read this Halloween.

2. Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Many people have seen the Claymation movie, and in its own way, the original book is even more terrifying. In Gaiman’s novel, the reader follows a young girl who steps through a door to discover a dark wonderland crawling with miraculous nightmares. This is a perfect book for young readers and adults alike.

3. Misery by Stephen King

If ghosts and goblins aren’t your thing, Misery might be a good book for you. Ripe with psychological terror, the book follows the story of a novelist whose “biggest fan” imprisons him in her house until he writes the book that she wants from him. Prepare for fear, anger, and a whole lot of frustration when you read this book. You’ve been warned.

4. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe

Most people have heard of this classic poem, and it’s always a fine read at Halloween time. Dark, vibrant imagery, catchy rhymes, squawks of “Nevermore!” What’s not to love about this poem?

5. Click Clack the Rattlebag by Neil Gaiman

Another Gaiman piece, this is a short story about a man being led into the dark where monsters lurk, and it all begins with a bedtime story. The story is concise, creepy, and sure to send shivers down your spine. There is a recording of the story read by Neil Gaiman on YouTube, and his British accent is purely hypnotic, so it’s great to listen to while you’re falling asleep…if you don’t mind a few nightmares.

I hope you will enjoy these spooky reads! Be sure to dim the lights, grab some hot tea, and curl up with one of these great reads this October. Happy Halloween!
