The Blackville-Hilda Hawks Track and Field teams traveled to Calhoun County for the Region 4-A region meet and Upper State qualifiers. The boys and girls teams competed in team competitions and individuals competed to earn a trip to the Upper State Track and Field Championships to be held Saturday, May 11 at Lower Richland High School.

Both the boys and girls teams had outstanding individual and team performances, with the Blackville-Hilda Girls Track and Field team earning the title of Region Champions and the boys team finished as Region runners-up. In addition to the outstanding team finishes, a very large group of Hawks have earned the right to advance to the Upper State Championships.

Hawks head coach Rushani Burke was very pleased with his team’s efforts and results. Coach Burke wanted to thank several people.

“Foremost, I wish to express gratitude to the Lord for guiding me on this journey, as well as to my committed assistant coaches: Cedrick Collins, Faith Vice, Tonya Coleman, and Paris Mason (AD), whose unwavering support has been instrumental in the success of our program. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the administrations of both Blackville-Hilda High School and Macedonia Elementary-Middle for their unwavering support throughout this journey, as well as to all the parents whose presence and encouragement at the Region Championship fueled our athletes’ spirits.”

Burke went on to say, “I am proud to see the fruits of our athletes’ labor. Their relentless dedication since the onset of the season has culminated in a resounding victory. Fielding a team of 18 talented young women, we witnessed an outstanding performance as they clinched the 2024 Girls Region 4-A Championship with an impressive 194 points. This triumph holds special significance for Blackville-Hilda High School, marking our first Region Championship victory since 2002.”

Coach Burke continued, saying, “Our team of 26 young men showcased exceptional grit and tenacity, narrowly missing the mark against Calhoun County by a mere 14 points. With Blackville securing 223 points against Calhoun County’s 237, it was evident that victory would require near-perfection in execution. Nevertheless, our boys fought valiantly, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to the sport.”

Athletes who finished in the top four of an event along with anyone who finishes in the next best eight performances across the Upper State, qualify for the Upper State Championships.

Blackville-Hilda will be very well represented at Upper State this year.

“Noteworthy performances abound, with both our male and female 4x100m relay teams breaking their own records set this year. Outstanding performances on the girls’ side include Breyanna Williams, who won all three of her individual events: 100m, 110m hurdles, and 400m hurdles. Breyanna Williams is the only female in the history of Blackville-Hilda Track and Field to break below the 13:00-second barrier, clocking a new personal best of 12.84 seconds. She also contributed to helping the girls’ 4x100m relay team secure first place. Anastasia Beaver also excelled, placing first in the girls’ 400m and contributing to both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams securing first place. On the boys’ side, Jaquel Holman stood out by winning first place in both of his individual events: 100m and 200m, and aiding the boys’ 4x100m relay team in securing first place, achieving a new personal best of 10.93 with his teammates Tamari Daniels clocking 10.99 and Namair Anderson clocking 11.32 to finish second and third, respectively.”

Good luck to the Blackville-Hilda Hawks as they compete at Upper State this weekend. Come on out to Lower Richland High School and cheer on your Hawks!
