GREENWOOD – Members of the Barnwell County Career Center FFA Chapter traveled to Greenwood on December 8 to compete in the state Agronomy Career Development Event hosted by the Piedmont Technical College Diversified Agriculture Program.

Career Development Events (CDEs) build on what is learned in agricultural classes and encourage members to put their knowledge into practice. Students were required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of agronomic practices and principles through completion of a written exam, identification of crops, weeds, insect pests, equipment, and agronomic disorders, and a team problem activity regarding fertilizer application rates.

Barnwell County Career Center FFA placed 9th in the state event. Team members included: Garyn Still, Kaitlyn Redd, Emerson Turner, and Cale Peachey. Mrs. Christle Gleaton is one of the agriculture teachers and FFA advisors for the Barnwell County Career Center Chapter where she teaches Agricultural Mechanics and Horticulture Pathways.

The SC FFA Agronomy CDE is sponsored by the South Carolina Soybean Board. South Carolina agricultural education serves more than 12,000 students across the state. Students receive instruction in one of five different pathways within the Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources career cluster. The South Carolina FFA Association is comprised of over 7,000 members across the state. The mission of the SC FFA Association is to develop premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
