18-year-old Williston man charged in Orangeburg Easter murder

A Williston man and a Bamberg man are charged in connection to an Easter shooting in Orangeburg that left one dead and two others injured.

Levern Miguel Glover, 18, of Williston and Drevon Malik Owens, 19, of Bamberg are each charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of criminal conspiracy. Glover is also charged with three counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.

The charges stem from a drive-by shooting on Sunday, April 9 where three people were shot outside of the Southern Lodge hotel on St. Matthews Road in Orangeburg around 11:47 a.m. The shooting left 15-year-old Dantavious Dowling of Denmark dead. A 14-year-old male was shot in his back and complained to deputies that he couldn’t feel his legs. A 23-year-old man was shot in his leg but tried to render aid to Dowling along with other witnesses, according to an incident report.

“This is truly mindboggling as to why someone would commit such a senseless act,” said Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell. “You know we are going to find you. We will not give up until you are brought to justice to face your crimes.”

Deputies collected statements from multiple witnesses, including guests and staff of the Southern Lodge and the nearby Super 8 Motel. These witness statements provided crucial information on the shooting that happened in broad daylight, including a description of the red Honda Accord that was occupied by the suspects.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, almost five months after the crime, authorities announced they had apprehended and charged two of the three individuals alleged to be involved. Glover is accused of shooting the victims while Owens is accused of being the driver.

A third suspect is being held on charges in another state, but will eventually be brought back to South Carolina to face charges here. That person’s name was redacted from warrants against Glover and Owens. It’s also unclear of their exact role in the crime.

The ongoing investigation is being led by Inv. Robert Davis.
