Scarecrows usually scare away birds from crops, but three local displays aim to “scare up” tourism and community pride.
Scarecrow villages are popping up throughout Barnwell County during the month of October.
• Barnwell: The Rotary Club of Barnwell County is hosting its annual Scarecrow Village in downtown Barnwell. All businesses, organizations, schools, churches and more are invited to participate. Entry fee is $25. Entries must be set up by Oct. 12. Online voting on the club’s Facebook page begins Oct. 15. If you'd like to enter a scarecrow, email barnwellrotary@gmail.com.
• Blackville: The Harvest Time on Main contest is underway in downtown Blackville. Entries must be set up by Oct. 10. There is no entry fee. Contact Ann Pernell at 803-645-8166 to enter.
• Williston: The Ivy Garden Club of Williston is hosting its 7th annual fall scarecrow contest at lampposts along the rail trail in downtown Williston. Displays are now set up and judging will take place this week. People’s Choice will be awarded Oct. 19.
Vote on the club’s Facebook page. Prizes will be awarded in all three contests.
