The People-Sentinel will soon have a new home.
Publisher Jonathan Vickery has purchased a building located at 9089 Marlboro Avenue, across from Bi-Rite in Barnwell, that will soon serve as the newspaper’s new office. The purchase marks a significant investment in both the publication and the community it has served for more than 170 years.
“As a Barnwell native, I am excited to invest in both the community and newspaper I love so much. I’ve always admired this building and am excited to make it our new home so we can continue serving the community,” said Vickery.
The newspaper, which has operated in downtown Barnwell in recent years, will remain at its current location this week, but plans to be operational in the new space effective Monday, Feb. 23.
“We’ve enjoyed our time at 22 Burr Street in downtown Barnwell the last couple years. It’s a beautifully renovated space. We thank our landlords, ASHAR Enterprises, for their commitment to investing in Barnwell, a place we all love. However, after years of renting, we are excited to purchase our permanent home,” he said.
Founded in 1852, The People-Sentinel is one of the region’s oldest continuously operating businesses. Vickery said the move represents not just a change of address, but a commitment to the newspaper’s long-term future.
“The move marks not just a relocation, but a renewed promise to continue serving our community with integrity, dedication and hometown pride. Our commitment to local news and our community remains the same, regardless of where we are located,” he said.
Excited for the future of his hometown newspaper, Vickery encourages the community to continue supporting local journalism by subscribing, advertising, donating and sharing the newspaper’s work.
“We look forward to serving the community for generations to come, but we can’t do it without the community’s support,” he said.
