AIKEN - A graveside service for Joseph Robert “Bob” Lain, 89, of Aiken, S.C. will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at Aiken Memorial Gardens, 1523 Edgefield Hwy., Aiken, S.C. with the Pastor Brancie Stephens officiating and U.S. Navy Honors accorded.
The family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m. at the cemetery in Aiken and all other times at the home of his daughter, Carline Basey, 38 Ridgecrest Road, Aiken, S.C. 29801.
Robert passed away at home on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
Honored to serve as pallbearers will be all of his grandchildren.
Born in Barnwell County, S.C., he was a son of the late Jesse E. Lain and Lore Dyches Lain. Bob was first married to the late Agnes Jay Abeyta, mother of Shiela Lampechkun, then married the late Faye Crews Lain, mother of the other children, and later married Frances Chalk Basey Lain and had several years together before her passing.
Bob proudly served in the United States Navy and later worked for Santee Cooper where he worked as a Substation Operator until his retirement having worked for 22 years. Bob lived in Aiken most of his life but always called Barnwell County his home. He always enjoyed coming back to visit his friends and family.
Survivors include his daughters, Betty Jean Wallace of Gaffney, S.C., Shiela Lain (John) Lampechkun of Bakersfield, CA, Carline Basey and Brenda Lain, both of Aiken, S.C.; a son, Ricky (Connie) Rule of Trenton, S.C.; his grandchildren, David (Michelle) Longshore of Newberry, S.C., Stacy Longshore of Gaffney, S.C., Justin (Sherrise) Hillemann of Bakersfield, CA, Terry Cadden of McCormick, S.C., Nicole Black of Grovetown, GA, Ryan (Christina) Lain of Aiken, S.C., David (Abigail) Rule of Aiken, S.C., Anna (Debbie) Rule of Augusta, GA and Joseph Lampechkun of Bakersfield, CA; 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, David Lee Lain of Barnwell; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Evelyn Hawkins.
In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Lain; a granddaughter, Donna Longshore; his two sisters, Joyce Mashburn and Sybil Owens; and a brother, Jesse Russell Lain.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Agape Hospice of Aiken nurses and staff, including a special thank you to Hillery Rucker and Montasia Barrett for all of the love, care and concern that they have shown Bob and his family during this difficult time.
