Two events aim to feed those in need

Two separate events on the same day share a mission of feeding the community’s seniors with a special pre-Thanksgiving feast.

Various community partners are coming together to host the Senior Friendsgiving Luncheon and the Friendsgiving Feast, two free events that each serve the purpose of showing gratitude to the community’s seniors. Both events take place this Thursday, November 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at different locations.

Senior Friendsgiving Feast

The Barnwell County Helpline, Barnwell County Community Engagement Department, Augusta Fiberglass and Generations Unlimited are uniting to host the Senior Friendsgiving Luncheon at the Gail Reyes Senior Center (11403 Ellenton Street, Barnwell).

“This event is a heartfelt gathering created to honor the wisdom, joy, and lifetime of contributions from those who have built the foundation of our community. It’s a reminder that our seniors are the heartbeat of Barnwell County. Their stories, resilience, and kindness continue to inspire generations to come. This celebration is simply one way to say, ‘We see you, we thank you, and we cherish you,’” said Hilary Hindman, Barnwell County’s director of community engagement & recreation.

Guests will enjoy a home-cooked meal generously provided by Michael Morrow of Hilda Grocery, along with uplifting entertainment by Bo Gardner. Adding a spiritual touch to the afternoon, Dana Bell, youth minister at First Baptist Church of Barnwell, will share an encouraging word to remind everyone of the strength that comes from faith and fellowship.

Friendsgiving Feast

The Friendsgiving Feast held at the Community Soup Kitchen (161 Allen Street, Barnwell) is a collaborative effort of the Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office, Barnwell McDonald’s, Community Soup Kitchen, and members of the community.

“This event is for senior citizens, those who do not have a place to call home, and those who are experiencing hard times. A pre-Thanksgiving meal is being served compliments of friends of this community and neighboring communities who have donated their time and prepared dishes to make this event possible,” said Captain Eric Kirkland, community relations deputy for the BCSO.

Sgt. John Holston of the BCSO will be the guest speaker while Dennis Perry Jr. and school resource officer Lisa Carrigg will render a few musical selections.
