Spillway and dam renovations underway at Barnwell State Park

Barnwell State Park is undergoing major renovations to repair its historic spillways and ensure the long-term stability of its dam structures.

These improvements, prompted by storm damage and regulatory requirements, will temporarily affect lake activities but promise a safer and more sustainable future for the park.

Park Manager Eddie Richburg, who oversees maintenance and operations, explained that the work primarily focuses on two key areas: repairing spillways originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s and implementing state-mandated dam maintenance guidelines.

“These walls have suffered erosion from storms and flooding over the years,” Richburg said. “In addition, we’re addressing requirements from the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) regarding vegetation control around the dams.”

According to DHEC guidelines, all trees and understory vegetation must be kept at least 10 feet from the base of public pond dams. This means that while larger trees can remain at a safe distance, smaller trees and brush must be cleared to prevent root damage to the dam’s structure.

The project is expected to take four to five months to complete, though contractors believe it could be finished sooner. The work will require lowering lake levels, which will temporarily affect fish habitats, though the fish are expected to relocate to deeper areas.

The most noticeable impact for visitors will be the closure of boat access, with the swimming area also remaining closed for the season. However, shore fishing will still be allowed under certain conditions, and the park’s other amenities—including trails, cabins, picnic shelters, and playgrounds—will remain open.

“For those looking for alternative spots to boat and fish, we recommend Lake Edgar Brown or nearby rivers such as the South Edisto and Salkehatchie,” Richburg said.

While temporary inconveniences may affect visitors, these renovations are crucial for preserving the park’s infrastructure and ensuring safety. By addressing both erosion concerns and regulatory requirements, Barnwell State Park is making an investment in its future, ensuring that it remains a cherished destination for years to come.
