Snow melts across Barnwell County after winter storm drops 2 inches

Posted

The last snowflake has fallen in Barnwell County.

As of Sunday afternoon, Feb. 1, the snow is melting in many parts of the county as the sun shines and temperatures warm up.

According to data from the National Weather Service, our county received two inches of snow. That was recorded in Hilda, but is a good average for the entire county.

"Throughout the day it looks like most is melting off and shedding," said Barnwell County Emergency Management Director Eric Turner.

He said there have been no problems with power outages and transportation looks pretty good across area roads. So far, law enforcement officials have not reported any issues on local roads.

The main concern is snow melting as temps warm up and later refreezing when the temps dip this evening. However, Turner said he doesn’t see this being an issue, especially since many roads were prepped with brine before the winter storm hit.

"It looks like a refreeze isn’t going to be an  issue," said Turner.

Out of an abundance of caution, schools in Barnwell and Allendale counties are closed on Monday, Feb. 2, instead operating as an e-learning day.

Also, Barnwell County government offices will operate on a two-hour delay tomorrow, opening at 11 a.m.
