Sean Clancy remembered after fatal wreck

Posted

A  24-year-old man who grew up in Barnwell died last week from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle wreck in Aiken County.

Sean Clancy, 24, of Aiken, was driving a 2008 Lincoln MKZ north on Jaywood Road around 5:45 p.m. on September 17 when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, striking a ditch and tree, according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables and Master Trooper Brandon Bolt with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Clancy was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was transported by EMS to an area hospital where he died from his injuries at 7:38 p.m.

“Sean Clancy was an awesome nephew and an all-around great guy. He was gentle and caring, had a goofy laugh and I loved being his uncle. His absence on this earth will forever be felt,” stated his uncle, Ric Douglas, on Facebook.

Clancy grew up in Barnwell, but lived in Aiken for the past few years. He worked at Energy Solutions in Barnwell County.

Clancy’s mother, Janet Homyer, also shared a tribute to her son on Facebook, including a personalized version of the classic song “You Are My Sunshine”.

Homyer said she sang the song to Clancy when he was young and occasionally even after he grew up, including just a few weeks before his death. She said she never sang it in front of others because she knew it would embarrass him.

You are my Sean-shine

My only Sean-shine

You make me happy when skies are gray

You’ll never know, Dear, how much I love you

Please don’t take my Sean-shine away.

A celebration of life service for Clancy will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 at First Baptist Church of Barnwell (161 Allen Street) at 11 a.m. Visitation is at 10 a.m.

As the coroner’s office and SCHP investigate the wreck, Clancy’s loved ones are remembering the young man whose life ended far too soon – and the “Sean-shine” he brought into their lives.

For his mother, that familiar song now carries a much deeper meaning.

“I’m so glad God lent you to me … even if just for a little while,” wrote Homyer in her post.
