Some positions, particularly substitute applications and certified teacher applications, remain open throughout the year. We encourage anyone interested in employment with BCSD, whether as a teacher, bus driver, instructional aide, or any one of the many other positions districtwide, to visit our website regularly to view the most up-to-date opportunities.
To explore current openings, please visit www.bcsd.net, click on the Job Openings tab, then select Apply Today to view and apply for available positions. We would love the opportunity to talk with you about joining our team and making a positive impact on students in Barnwell County.
For those of us in the field of education, we do not see it as just a profession, but a calling. Sometimes that calling begins later in life with a passion for impacting the lives of students. BCSD also wants to support individuals who are interested in pursuing teaching through an alternative pathway to certification. If you have ever considered teaching—or feel a calling to serve students in this way—we invite you to contact the BCSD Human Resources Department to learn more about available pathways and opportunities.
Across our county, there are many talented adults who may feel drawn to education but assume that becoming a teacher means starting over or returning to college for another degree. The good news is that this simply is not the case. South Carolina offers clear and accessible pathways for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education. Career-changers, professionals, and community members with real-world experience are not only welcomed in our classrooms, but they are needed.
One of the most common pathways is the Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE), administered by the South Carolina Department of Education. Through this program, qualified individuals are hired by a school district in a PACE-approved subject area based on their bachelor’s or graduate degree and begin teaching while completing certification requirements. This allows aspiring educators to earn a salary, receive mentoring and support, and complete required coursework at the same time. Many teachers complete the program within one to three years, all while making an immediate impact on students’ lives.
In addition to PACE, there are other alternate pathway programs such as American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE), Carolina Collaborative for Alternative Preparation (CAP), and Teachers of Tomorrow. Also, several colleges and universities across the state offer alternative certification or certification-only programs designed specifically for adults who already hold a degree. These programs often provide flexible evening, weekend, or online coursework for those who prefer a more structured path into the classroom.
South Carolina also recognizes the value of professional expertise. Individuals with backgrounds in business, healthcare, agriculture, information technology, and other skilled trades may qualify for Career and Technical Education (CTE) certification, allowing them to share real-world knowledge and skills with students preparing for both college and careers.
While specific requirements vary, most pathways include a bachelor’s degree, required exams, background checks, and ongoing professional learning. What they all share is a belief that strong teachers come from many different backgrounds and life experiences.
If you are interested in learning more about employment opportunities or alternative certification pathways, we encourage you to visit www.bcsd.net or contact our Human Resources Department. We look forward to welcoming passionate, dedicated individuals who want to serve students and help shape the future of Barnwell County.
