Filing is underway for municipal seats across Barnwell County.
All seven municipalities have town council seats up for grabs while the towns of Snelling and Williston also have mayoral seats on the Municipal General Election to be held Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Here’s a look at the available seats and who filed as of press time on Tuesday, August 12:
• City of Barnwell (3 district council seats)
–District 1 - Ricky Dixon
–District 3 - Alicia Davis
–District 5 - Louis T. Claytor III
• Town of Blackville – (3 full-term at-large council seats & 1 unexpired term at-large seat)
–Bruce Johnson & Richard Olsen
• Town of Elko (2 at-large council seats)
–George Carrie & Jerry H. Greene
• Town of Kline (2 at-large council seats)
–No one has filed
• Town of Hilda (2 at-large council seats)
–No one has filed
• Town of Snelling (1 mayor and 2 at-large council seats)
–Mayor - Paul Moore
–Town Council - Carl S. Brookie Anderson Jr. & Annette G. Moore
• Town of Williston (1 mayor and 3 at-large council seats)
–Mayor – Billy A. Brett Williams III
–Council – Eric Moody & Brandon Widener
While the towns of Elko, Kline and Snelling do not charge a fee for candidates to file, the following fees apply for the other towns: $25 for the City of Barnwell, $75 for the Town of Blackville, $5 for the Town of Hilda, and $25 for the Town of Williston.
The deadline to file is this Friday, August 15 at noon at the Barnwell County Voter Registration and Elections Office (367 Fuldner Rd., Barnwell).
Special Snelling Election
A special election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4 to fill an unexpired council seat on Snelling Town Council.
Snelling Town Councilman Wiley Moore resigned on August 1 due to moving out of the county. His primary legal residence is now Edisto Island, according to his resignation letter.
“It has been a privilege and pleasure to serve on the town council,” said Moore in his letter.
This is a nonpartisan election, so no party affiliation will be placed on the ballot.
Anyone desiring to be a candidate for the unexpired Snelling seat can file with the Barnwell County Voter Registration & Elections Office.
Books will open for filing on August 22 at noon and close September 1 at noon. There is no filing fee.
Early Voting
In order to vote in the Nov. 4 election, voters must be registered by Oct. 5.
Polls across the county will be open on Tuesday, Nov. 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the municipal election.
Early voting will be held Monday through Friday from Oct. 20 through Oct. 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Barnwell County Voter Registration & Elections Office (367 Fuldner Rd., Barnwell).
