A Barnwell County coaching legend has been appointed to lead the Blackville-Hilda Hawks.

Leonard "Dwayne" Garrick is the new head football coach at Blackville-Hilda High School, effective immediately. He brings over three decades of "exceptional coaching experience" to the Hawks, according to a press release from the Barnwell County School District issued Nov. 18.

"We are fortunate to have someone of Coach Garrick's caliber and experience step into this role," said BCSD Superintendent Dr. Crissie Stapleton. "His extensive background in building successful football programs and his deep roots in our community make him an ideal fit for Blackville-Hilda."

Most recently, Garrick served as assistant football coach and offensive line coach at Barnwell High School (2024-2025), where he was responsible for breaking down film and coordinating the run game and pass protections. However, his distinguished career has taken him all over the state, including head coaching positions at Aiken High (2023-2024), Barnwell High (2015-2023 and 1999-2002), Williston-Elko High (2007-2014), and Hillcrest High School (2002-2006). He also served as assistant football coach at Blackville-Hilda High from 1992-1995, bringing his experience full circle.

"I am honored to return to Blackville-Hilda and serve this community," said Coach Garrick. "I look forward to working with our student-athletes and building on the strong foundation of the Hawks football program."

Coach Garrick takes over for BHHS athletic director Paris Mason, who stepped in as head coach in September following the resignation of Geremy Saitz after just two games into the season. After losing the first four games of the season, the Hawks were able to turn things around under Mason’s leadership by winning the next four games. The Hawks finished the season with a 6-6 record on Nov. 14 after falling 28-0 to C.A. Johnson in the second round of the playoffs.

Mason’s appointment as head coach was always meant to be temporary, said Stapleton, though Mason will continue to be athletic director and assist with football.

The decision to hire Garrick was made by Blackville-Hilda High School. The announcement of his hiring was made public after the season wrapped and to give Garrick a chance to meet his new players, which took place Nov. 18.

Throughout his career, Garrick has held numerous leadership positions, including athletic director at multiple schools and various roles within the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association and Football Coaches Association.

Coach Garrick attended Presbyterian College (1982-1985) and earned his undergraduate degree from S.C. State University (1990-1992), where he also served as graduate assistant coaching inside and outside linebackers. He is certified in History Education and Social Studies.

Coach Garrick resides in Barnwell with his family.
