FAIRFAX - Cambridge Trott Stone Sr., born March 3, 1930, passed away peacefully in his home on July 17, 2024 at the age of 94. He was the son of the late Charles Asbury Stone and Leila DeLoach Stone of Gifford, S.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Fannie; and grandson, William (Billy) Thomas Stone.
Cambridge grew up in Gifford, S.C. and was the youngest of 13 children. He spoke fondly of growing up in a large, loving, musical family. Over the years, he shared many childhood stories that entertained family and friends. Cambridge was fascinated with electronics as a child and would take radios apart and put them back together for fun.
After marrying the love of his life, Fannie Louise Brown in 1950, they made their home in Fairfax, S.C. Cambridge joined the United States Army shortly after they were married. It was no surprise that his job as CPL Cambridge Stone was radio repairman. He served his country in the Korean War for two years and when he returned home from Germany, he set up his own electronics shop as a side hobby. He retired after 35 years from the Savannah River Plant as an Instrumental and Electronics Mechanic. He and Fannie enjoyed traveling together and spending time with family for many years after retirement.
Many knew Cambridge as an accomplished saxophonist. At a young age, he began playing in Walker Smith’s band and eventually formed his own Cambridge Stone Orchestra. These years afforded him opportunities to play for many dances, wedding receptions, and events throughout the state. He also enjoyed playing for church with Fannie, who was church organist, and with his family during gatherings and events. After retirement, he and Fannie joined the Carolina Cruisers and he continued to play with the Frustrated Maestro’s on their many trips throughout the United States.
Cambridge had many interests. He was a pilot, enjoyed fishing and hunting, built many additions to his home, enjoyed traveling the United States, was a Mason, and claimed to know how to cook everything. His famous catfish stew and fried fish brought friends over to enjoy a meal and spend time together. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfax where he served as former deacon and was actively involved in the music ministry for many years. His faith and love of God was unwavering. Cambridge was a loving husband, father, grandfather, “Papa Bear” and friend. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Fairfax First Baptist Church with Pastor James Davis officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
Cambridge is survived by four children: Cambridge Trott Stone Jr. of Ravenel, S.C., Larry Quintin Stone of Charleston, S.C., Rodney Keith Stone (Donna) of Gilbert, S.C. and Thea Coleman Jackman (Greg) of Simpsonville, S.C.; grandchildren: Cambridge Trott “Trey” Stone III (Chelsea), Perry Elizabeth Tutterow (Josh), Ashley Lauren Stone, Ransome Alexander Coleman Jr. (Anna), Angela Michelle Strong, Amelia Ann Coleman; great-grandchildren: Sofia Renae Stone, Julian Nelson and Thea Mae Tutterow, William Thomas Jones, Jack Stone, Baird Phillips Coleman, Emma Marie and Leila Kate Strong.
