The Barnwell Community Soup Kitchen received a $25,000 donation from the Crane Fund for Widows and Children.
The soup kitchen was one of several local organizations to receive a donation in 2023 as part of this annual charitable giving.
“Matthew 19:19 tells us to ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ and we want you to know that your donation is just one of the ways that you are doing exactly that,” said Sherrie Still, director of the soup kitchen.
The donation will help the soup kitchen continue its mission of feeding people physically and spiritually.
“Their hearts and spirits may have a hard time being filled, if their stomachs are physically empty. This is one of the many reasons our ministry exists. These two fill-ups wouldn't be possible without compassionate people such as yourself who come alongside us in sharing the Love of Jesus,” said Still.
Crane, which is located in Williston, not only donates monetarily to the soup kitchen, but sends a different team to provide the meal and serve on the third Thursday of every month.
“Being able to give back to the community is such a blessing, we had a great time working with each other, and nothing warmed our hearts more than seeing everyone’s face light up with a smile as we served food to them!” stated one Crane employee.
Another employee said it’s an “honor and privilege to be able to serve our community” and that volunteering instills a sense of pride in the community.
“Each day I wake knowing how blessed I am to work for a company that allows me to serve the community – and allows me to pay it forward by preparing and serving food to individuals who might otherwise not have a meal that day…for most of us, a meal is something we unconsciously take for granted,” stated another employee.
One employee said volunteering allows co-workers to bond as a team while providing an important service to people in need.
“Without people having a heart and a passion to help others, it wouldn’t be possible. There really aren't words that express how grateful we are for the generosity your company continues to share,” said Still.
The soup kitchen operates Monday through Friday at lunch in the activity center at First Baptist Church of Barnwell. They always welcome new clients and new volunteers.
